Maintaining the Facebook philosophy of open, unperturbed networking, founder Mark Zuckerberg kept cool over reports that the enormously popular Facebook is targeted by multiple virus assaults. “Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better,” Zuckerberg was quoted on Radio One in February about his reply to security firms warning Facebook users of unmitigated threats. Security firm Trend Micro has released an advisory early this week that the Koobface virus has resurfaced in Facebook along with four other malware. The Koobface virus, which was detected in December, tricks users to click on a hoax YouTube page and open or save a malware. At least two Facebook users have reported to have been victimized by fake applications, such as “Facebook-closing down!!! and ‘Error Check System’. Hackers have been able to access the profile and personal information of Facebook users by tricking them to click on unknown applications. The virus spreads throughout the network because hackers forward fake messages to encourage users to download programs. TrendMicro has criticized Facebook for its open system where verification of applications is not practiced before these are made available on the social network. TrendMicro senior security advisor Rik Ferguson was quoted on BBC Tuesday that hackers are using social networking to generate rogue applications. He also revealed that new hoax applications will be propagated by hackers in the social network very soon. |
