Botnet attack spreads across continents

The criminal botnet gang strikes again, this time with the use of a powerful worm called DOWNAD.A that is now wreaking havoc across continents, security experts disclosed.

According to Trend Micro, several home broadband networks have been infected with the WORM_DOWNAD.A across Europe, in the US, Latin America, China, India and the Middle East.

A previous attack from the botnet gang using Networm also exploited a publicly disclosed vulnerability in all supported versions of Windows and Windows Server.

An MS08-067 patch released by Microsoft was exploited by the botnet gang to build an updated version of Networm. The said patch had since been released out of cycle when it was discovered that the flaw had been used to spread the worm.

Trend Micro said at least 500,000 unique hosts have been victimized by this threat.
